"Ok, all these boxes to my left are records we can't sell anymore for one reason or another - mostly because we got sued. There are also some old weird promo singles that we were supposed to give away, but i guess we must have run out of people to give them to."
We moved further into the room and I pointed to a wall of brown boxes, occupying about a third of the entire space.
"All of those are Nirvana CDs that were returned to us from Caroline. But nevermind that, the good stuff will be found here on this side." I said, making a grand gesture towards a smaller pile of paper and assorted boxes.
We spent the rest of that morning plowing through these boxes. What we found mostly was business stuff - accounts payable boxes from hell stuffed with weird old receipts from dead or dying vendors, cancelled checks, manuals for outdated and irrelevent software packages, a clock radio. But amongst the detritous we also found a few gems - original drafts of Nirvana bios, original copies of ancient company newsletters, press clippings from long deceased publications. And of course, the holy grail, the Cat Butt press kit! This is the stuff from which Aaron Tuller, gifted rock-n-roll anthropologist, created the official Sub Pop "History" site.
This site documents the look and feel of Sub Pop prior to 1991. It includes all of
the original columns that Bruce Pavitt wrote for the Rocket between 1983 and
1988.
