2009 is here and we’re starting off the year real slow like, so there are no new records on which to report this month. There’s nothing like looking backward to see how you’re moving forward (?!), so let’s take a walk down Sub Pop employee memory lane via facebook. Thanks for uploading these unwanted embarrassing photos, friends of my coworkers! Keep ‘em coming and I’ll keep sharing! The first person to correctly identify all of these awkward teenagers will receive…

To Whom it May Concern,
I’m writing to say how much I appreciate including a digital download with your packaged vinyl. LP records have long been my preferred format for a multitude of reasons. On the other hand, I lack the components to transcribe my analog collection to a compressed digital format. So, for all recently purchased music, this meant making sacrifices when buying on my preferred medium. Sub Pop vinyl means no compromises Now, I always check the vinyl section…

Last week, the nominations for the 2009 Grammy Awards were announced and we were pleasantly confused to discover that once again TWO (2) artists recording for the Sub Pop label earned nominations!
We are, of course, talking about No Age and Flight of the Conchords.
In category 80 (aka Best Comedy Album), the self-titled debut long-player by Flight of the Conchords is up against albums by Lewis Black, Kathy Griffin, Harry Shearer, and… George Carlin.
And, in category 88, (the award for…

Oh, God, it pains me to do this but it must be done and I’m the one that has to do it. Here we go, y’all—it’s time for the Big Big Year End Wrap-Up Spectacular for 2008! In the interest of time and/or not boring you to death I’m just going to list the full lengths and I’m not even going to do it in order, just for fun.
If my math is good, we put out 18 long players…

It’s true. The Ruby Suns song “Oh, Mojave” has been used by Microsoft in their commercial for somthing called Windows Vista. I asked our IT department what that was and apparently its what makes your computer go, but only if you’re using the John Hodgman kind of computer. So there you have it. Anyway, if for some reason you overhear your friend (or even someone else’s friend) mumbling to his or herself “My oh my that’s a catchy little ditty…

Almost two years ago, my sister and her boyfriend started an online radio station called Hollow Earth, featuring “found sound, field recordings, story-telling (sometimes paranormal), dream-collecting, radio plays, live house shows and local in-home performances.” In addition to creating an eccentric online station for people to listen to from the comfort of their homes, they have held some pretty cool events in Seattle to foster a sense of community (Magma Fest) and to promote local musicians, whilst raising money to…

The five mellifluous, industrious, and hirsute young men of Fleet Foxes have, it was announced earlier today, won the inaugural Uncut Music Award! The Fleet Foxes’ debut won out over some very stiff competition, including the likes ot Radiohead, The Raconteurs, Vampire Weekend, Drive-By Truckers, and Bon Iver. Much more about all of this, including comments from the judges, can, and really should, be read here. Congratulations Fleet Foxes! We’re awfully proud of you guys and happy to see you…

Are you a regular FLAC user? If you are, I’ve got a couple quick questions for you:
What software do you use for listening and encoding FLAC files? Why? (Include your platform!)
Do you use Ogg containers? What are the pros and cons?
Are you “core?”
(Okay, okay. No need to respond to that last one.)
Answer in the comments. Thanks!

Well, well, it’s November already and I’m sure I probably don’t need to mention it, but if you don’t vote on November 4th then you are a total asshole. Moving on…
In a somewhat unprecedented but sure to be financially viable move, Sub Pop will only release vinyl singles for the remainder of 2008 or until gay marriage is legal in Washington state, whichever comes first. In celebration of Obama’s win tomorrow we are letting loose onto the earth three singles…
