A Dry, Basic History

Scott and I started playing together in May of 1991. Our first show was at the International Pop Underground Convention in Olympia, WA in August of that year, and was followed by various shows around the NW. In August 1992, having released our first 7", we packed our kit bags, climbed in a Geo Prism and set out with our friends Oswald 5-0 and Some Velvet Sidewalk on a tour that took us to Boston, NYC, Washington, D.C. and back, with stops along the way.

In spring of 1993, we toured the west coast for two weeks with Lois (of K Records fame), then went to Missouri, Kansas and Texas to do a week of shows opening up for Dinosaur Jr. and Gumball.

July of 1993 found us signed to Sub Pop and in Minnesota recording MANOS. The "Spitfire" 7" was released in August, we filmed the video for "Noel, Jonah and Me", and in September we started a three month tour that included two shows with Liz Phair, a week with Fugazi and two weeks with Hazel. We circled back to NYC to play the label¼s showcase for CMJ, then continued onto England for a round of press and three shows. We flew back to the States and toured home. After a brief rest and Thanksgiving, we toured the west coast with The Poster Children.

January was spent being home, doing the second video (for "Sunday"), and preparing to continue touring. The spring tour began in San Francisco, opening up for Luna, and continued for 6 weeks. It included dates opening for Liz Phair in LA and San Francisco), the Supersuckers at SXSW, but was mostly spent playing with la lovely Lois. In April 5th we supported The Afghan Whigs for 2 1/2 weeks in the east and south. A couple weeks later we went to NYC to perform on the Conan O'Brien show, and from there flew to Europe where we toured for 5 weeks opening up for Codeine.

We were home for the summer, with a brief journey north to Olympia to play at the Yo Yo Records convention. The fall saw us in the NE for more dates (including a show at CMJ with Stereolab, The Thurston MooreTrio, and Tindersticks, and a show at the Halifax Pop Explosion in Nova Scotia). We completed our year with a west Coast tour with 5th Column, a band from Toronto.

Most of 1995 was spent doing side projects and getting ready to record another album. "Strand" was recorded in July at Easley studios in Memphis. Additional recording took place in Seattle. We toured the west coast in October, opening for Superchunk, and then went to Chicago to mix the album.

More to Come....
