Apologies if it's been discussed before, but why don't they do interviews and why do they not play in California? Okay, and when will they be in Dallas?

-Andrew Hime

Tuesday, August 30, 1994
We're hoping Sunny Day will get to Dallas sometime in November. When they get there, you can ask them about California and interviews.

Well, I uh, wasn't planning to... it'd be extremely cool to meet a huge band like that.

like joyce said it's realy up to them....but as far as i can tell california is babylon, well not all of it (just where shows happen) there is greatness in california that is overshadowed by the bullshit......ya ever hear that killer eagles tune "hotel california"? well that what it's all about......"you can checkout any time you like ....but you can never leave" lotsa cool places down there in california you just don't want to get to deep into it. do what you like in life...ya know have a good time......just try to not hurt others and you'll be cool......... i think not playing california is fully justifiable.......but why the fuck do they play in all those other shit ass towns in the states and in canada? they have a song comming out on a soundtrack (i'm sure it will be widly available) later this year and at least in my ears it's the best thing they have done yet.....well whatever..........other than that...it's only the two 45's.......they do have (i think) 8 songs recorded that have yet to be available in circular format (that is you could firnd it on tape only) before they were on sub pop......this is all before jeremy joined, with dan singing.....so realy it's a different thing (if you have heard the first 7" you know what i'm sayin') but cool none the less! but i don't think they are too proud of it.........

Just curious -- why did they say they would never tour California and are now doing the "KROQ Acoustic Christmas"? I'd always assumed their anti-California stance was due to some sort of ideological stance but this indicates that 1) it wasn't or 2) they're hypocrites. I mean, I'm sorry... but L.A. is as bad as it gets in California. Guess they don't want to "sell out" by playing in superficial San Diego?
Yeah, whatever.

-Ak

Hi,
How could a person have an ideological stance against a state? I guess you could have a political stance against a state, such as California based on its approval of the illegal immigrant law, but that still seems a little pointless. If California is superficial or bad it's probably only a preview of what we can expect to happen in the rest of the country, anyway. We don't go there because one person in the band, for his own private reasons, simply refuses. So we're going without him. The idea is that because the show is acoustic, perhaps we can get away with only having one guitar. We're coming up with a set that will hopefully not suffer much for Dan's absence.

Some people seem to be upset that we're sticking to the rule, but others are happy that they'll get a chance to see the band in California. And the three of us are looking forward to it, so I think it should work out well. Thanks for the question,

Sincerely,
-Nate

P.S. I don't think the term "sell out" is relevant anymore.

Just a couple quick questions about Sunny Day Real Estate since there isn't a bio.
Is the band currently a five piece as thats what the liner notes seem to imply however Matt Colnon is listed as "doing everything else", could you maybe tell me just what he did do?

--He's the tour manager.

Does Jeremy do the main vocals on all the tracks and Daniel only contribute supporting vocals on songs like "In Circles"? I can't really reconginze any voice other than Jermy's on main vocals.

--yes

The band doesn't want to get lost in all the hype of the media (at least the was my impression from Nate's e-mail) yet they have a video in heavy rotation on MTV and will be appearing on some talk show (I forget the name). Are these facts true?

--It's the John Stewart show and the video is on MTV, though I wouldn't call it heavy rotation.

As I mentioned already, I have heard they have a video out, I assume it is the lead single. Could you tell me what this song is?

--Seven.

Lastly, they say, "the fairest teams would be...", are the people listed the employees of Sub Pop? From what I have seen on this list that is what it seems to be...

--I don't remember this from Nate's post. If it's names like Jonathan, Bobbi, Amy, Nils, Rich, Joyce etc., then yes, it's us.

Thanks for taking time to answer my questions. Any word on when the bios for other bands will be posted on empathy.subpop.com?

-- No. Try emailing press@subpop.com

The first time I saw them live was 1/10/94 at the Velvet Elvis Theater in Seattle, WA, they were impressive. I wish I could play bass like Nate Mendel, shit, he's got something goin' on. Yeah, anyhow, now they've played on a big tv talk show, they're in some sort of rotation on MTV, etcetera, etcetera. I guess this is the part where I'm supposed to start bitching about how I'll probably get to see them at the Seattle Center Arena or some other biiiiig Rock And Roll Stadium near you for Big Money.

Sunday, December 4, 1994 Sunny Day Real Estate is the best live band around. I just saw them last night at the Bottleneck in Lawrence, Kansas. It was incredible. The Bottleneck is really a neat club. It was worth the four-hour drive. I got to meet all of the guys in the band.

I heard A disturbing rumor about the band SUNNY DAY REAL ESTATE, I (being from Seattle) heard that SDRE might break up because of Jeremy, the singer. He supposebly turned hard christian and he is displeased of their new album that is almost out. Because of this he doesn't want it to be released. And because of this the entire band might break up. I don't know for sure if this is true, but I would gladly appreciate it if you'd respond if you know.

-Seth Littlefield

To Seth and other readers.
I'm sorry that you are disturbed about the rumor of us breaking up. It is amazing how fast these things travel. Now to begin with, I don't know where you got the idea that I am displeased with the new album. The album is not even finished yet, so how could I dislike it? In January I begin my vocals. Already I love the music alone. When I finish my vocals and the final mix is done, then a decision can be made of whether I like it or not. If I did not like the new album, that would be no reason for me to quit the band. When I look back at our last album Diary, I look at it as a diary of our emotions at the time it all went down. The same will be with the next album. It may not make me freak out in joy, it may not be to the best of our abilities, but it is who we were then. Yes sir I have given my life to Christ. For along time I dwelt on a lot of pain in my life. Pain that I had tried to get rid of in many different ways. I watched myself slowly shrivel up into a hopeless, bitter and lonely person. Well one thing led to another and I could not take it anymore so I took a shot on calling upon God. He answered me. My pain was gone. I was full of joy. I had hope again. All the hope that was squeezed out of me was replaced ten times. I had tried this in many different ways. None of them succeeded in saving me from hurt. Well , I was so full of joy that I wanted all of my friends to feel the way I did. So I told all of them, and of course they couldn't understand, since it was something that I had been going through myself. And also it is such a far thing to grasp, that it is easier to just blow it off. To give your life to Christ means to deny yourself, to completely live for him. Doing this will change your comfort zone that you had been trying to get since you can remember. You then are a new person desiring a whole different way then before. Most people definitely don't want their comfort changed, so they stay away from the idea of Jesus. The funny thing is, when you sincerely call upon him, though you let yourself go, He fills you with a joy and peace that far surpasses any joy, peace or comfort that you could possibly feel from earthly pleasures. Now, how this applies to the band breaking up. Well now that this has happened to me, Naturally I want to sing about it. I want it to be what sunny day real estate is about, so that others out there will hear. But there are mixed feelings about what we could do about me wanting to sing about Christ. One of the members doesn't mind me singing about Christ, another is very uncomfortable with the idea of singing about Jesus, and one didn't mind but now all of the sudden does. Well I understand where they are coming from because I was there. Jesus isn't anything that I want to compromise with for he is far more important then this music, financial security or popularity could ever be. So the idea of breaking up has been talked about. I have different intentions now. I want to take the band on a different path then they. It is no longer the financial freedom that once controlled me, but it is to expose people to truth for their sake and especially Jesus' sake. But who knows what is going to happen in the future. Every time I make a plan it gets changed. The future is the future. I hope that we come to a decision about the band that everyone is happy with.

Well my friend, you asked a couple questions and I gave you the whole story. Why give you the quick dumb version when you can get the story where it is. I'm going to say that there is more than what you see. I think most people believe that. Most people believe in some sort of God. Some create their own to their own comfort. Creating a mirror image of themselves, only calling it God. I must say that the true God is the one who is in the Bible, Jesus Christ. He is the only one whoever claimed to be God and on top of it all he rose from the dead. He has showed himself to me so clearly that I couldn't possibly believe otherwise. I would be a fool to say that he hasn't worked miracles in my life. When I didn't believe, there were no miracles. When I believed, the miracles still have not stopped. Call me crazy, for I'd rather be crazy and see what I've seen, then to ever go back to where I was. Now dear Seth, there is another reason that I write this letter. In it I hope you will let others who are interested read this letter to know where sunny day real estate and I stand, to clear up any confusion that is flying around. And especially to let you know of the intense change that Christ has put me through. I'm sure that you by now can see why. Maybe not through these words, but in the sincerity that I write this letter. I also intend for others to read this who are outside of your circle, Seth. These people would be, everyone in the band, and to all the people at Sub Pop. If my word is anything, this is the most sincere I have been in my life. Jesus Christ is Lord. There is a supreme truth to this world, and may your hearts search for it. Believe what you will. There is nothing more that I could do or say to show you. Believe me I have tried with many. Thanks for hearing me out.

With love,
-Jeremy Enigk

I saw your post about SDRE and I was wonderring if you could enlighten me about something... Were the members in straight edge bands before this one? I saw the singer's shirt in the video, and it got me wonderring... anyhow
Thanks... sorry to bother you...

-scotty

I think that was a Positive Greed shirt, which is a band that the person who does sound for the band, Greg, sang for. They weren't a straight edge band. William was in the band Unit Pride for a brief period during the mid 70's, but he doesn't like to talk about that. Jeremy doesn't smoke pot.

I know this is an old thread, but I never really got the story. What's going on with Sunny Day Real Estate? Are they:

a). broken up, no album

b). broken up but made one more album for us to love

c). not broken up and made one more album for us to love

d). not broken up but didn't make an album

e). in limbo and made/didn't make an album for us to love

Here's the other thing. The singer guy found religion. Does that mean he can't rock anymore? Why do religious bands always suck so much? Bach wrote religious music and it rocked. I think it has something to do with messages. I think christian rock bands are so into their messages that they forget to rock. I am not much of a U2 fan but they seemed to be able to balance the religion/rock thing better than most bands. Do any of you think if someone wrote a great song that you wouldn't like it if you knew the songwriter was devoted to Jesus Christ? Jesus Christ! Jesus Lizard. Jesus Jones. Jesus Chrysler. Christ on a Crutch. I am sure some of you know a few other Jesus bands. Godplow. God Bullies. God's Acre. God's Favorite band. God and Texas. God is my Copilot. How come religious bands never seem to have a sense of humor? You never hear of a religious band called the God Bullies. It's too bad.

Yes the band is defunct. It's probably obvious to all by now, being that Jeremy Enigk is doing his solo project now and Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith are Foo Fighters. Last I heard, the band broke up because Jeremy wanted to pursue Christian rock. Stop watching MTV, its main purpose is to confuse you so you become a mindless drone who will give up on thinking and go out and buy a Collective Soul album, or something to that effect. Jeremy seems like a very serious and intense guy, at least he seemed so when I met him, he seemed religious about everything (meaning he took things as serious as possible, including my comment to him after they played that they would become big. Jeremy said "All we want to do is play music", which I find admirable, and which is what I expected from him). And I do remember both stories. I even have a bumper sticker that reads: "POP ROCKS KILLED MIKEY".

Saturday, October 7, 1995 Does anyone have any information on SDRE's new album besides that it's released on October 24 and that there are 9 songs on it? Also, does anyone have any info on Jeremy Enigk's solo project???

-Fatty J. Blunt

You can access the SDRE web page through the Subpop site, it has clips from three of the songs on the new album. Also, the song 8 is supposed to be on the new one. It is out on October 24th.
