Mark Lanegan is best known as the singer for The Screaming Trees. Less known is Mark's longtime interest in the more intimate tunesmiths of years past, as first evidenced on his 1990 solo debut, The Winding Sheet.
Here's what a few people had to say about The Winding Sheet: Melody Maker: "The Winding Sheet marks the emergence of a considerable talent, and this is not something to be ignored or taken lightly." Spin: "The Winding Sheet comes as a surprise. It's not terrible or too self-conscious; more like inspired." Option: "Lanegan has forged an album of darkly beautiful music dominated by his whiskey growl of a voice..." Mark Lanegan's other release, Whiskey For The Holy Ghost, demonstrates an increasing talent for lyric and dramatic arrangement. His voice is truly one of the richest and most evocative in pop music today, with his solo material showing a depth and sensitivity that is only hinted at with his work with the Trees. Whiskey For The Holy Ghost includes guest appearances by members of Dinosaur Jr., Mudhoney, Tad, and others... Including the talents of Mike Johnson, who arranged, co-produced and played guitar on both of Mark Lanegan's solo albums. | |
