Followed by over a hundered slightly legendary shows. Interspersed with a couple of wholly legendary shows, "Flouting punk-rock rules of age, gender and status is more important to Hazel than playing for a cause or becoming spokespeople."
Breaking down walls of what Northwest music is "supposed" to sound like is what Hazel, Jody Bleyle (drums, vocals), Peter Krebs (guitar, vocals), Brady Smith (bass), Fred Nemo (dance), does so well. Their live performances challenge audiences to accept music as a multi-dimensional experience.
Brady, Jody and Pete all claim to have been junior high geeks. Pete states he "had a particulary miserable adolescence, socially." Brady claims to have been the biggest geek in the seventh grade. Though Jody's first rock album was KISS's Destroyer, she admits to grooving to Barry Manilow during her childhood. She doesn't feel, however, that her musical influences ae reflected in Hazel's music. Brady feels "the funny thing is that sometimes people think we're rock 'n' roll people, but we're not. We're still the geeks we were in seventh grade."
Maybe it's the memories of adolescence that make the band come alive, but whatever it is the music is precise and powerful.
