| This Record Came Out: September 9, 1997 CD/LP SPCD402 FULL BLOWN POSSESSION, the latest offering from the kings of swampy blues/rock swagger, finds the Grifters continuing to defy categorization. The new record presents the listener with a cubist kaleidoscope of sorts through which to view their unique musical collision involving glam, blues, classic and indie rock, to name but a few. It's a multi-genre pileup on the Memphis interstate and we passersby can't help but stare. For over eight years now, the Grifters have been refracting all of these disparate elements in an almost perverse way, creating a bent noise (some have gone so far as to suggest an entire universe) wholly their own. It's clear that any attempts at exorcising the specters that possess them would be futile, and after all, who wants to cast these demons out? Instead, come this Fall, the Grifters are fully prepared to bear witness to the advanced stages of their possession in every hamlet and burg in North America in an all-out touring assault. Gathering strength from the unanimous acclaim showered upon the band after their Spring tour (a tantalizing preview of new songs), they're coming to speak in tongues, handle snakes and give voice to the spirit within. Be forewarned, it's an inebriating and potent display; you will be changed. The testimony of the converted speaks volumes. Why not join us?
"While the songs sound just about ready to break, patient listening reveals interesting surprises: Unexpected flashes of reverb and off-the-cuff guitar solos suddenly burst through the sprawled-out tempos, just as voices jump in and out of the forefront with schizophrenic energy."
"...this shadowy Memphis foursome has produced some of the most casually stunning and beautifully damaged music currently ringing in the ears of indiedom, with each release mapping a steady march toward
greatness."
"They're only the best rock band in the world right now." |
