The Question Is No (Sub Pop)

by Bill Meyer - From Puncture Magazine.

Bands keep trying to grow and progress, and where does it get them? They end up sounding tired and lost like the Clash, the Who, or Wire. The Fastbacks, on the other hand, live under a pyramid, never changing but never decaying either. Kurt, Lulu, and Kim's new disc combines most of their recent double seven-inches with a bunch of rarities stretching back to 1980. Hit the shuffle play, though, and you'll never be able to tell which songs come from when. Each is a punky, spunky pop gem with fast 'n' loud guitars and unabashedly tuneful girl-voices. The Fastbacks are a band outside time. Listen to them with your morning coffee and they'll have you cheerfully out of your mind.
