Interview by Mike LaVella from Gearhead #3
GH: Bet you didn't expect to ever be interviewed for being in The Fastbacks, huh?
D: Ah... No.
GH: Well, you're a part of rock history now.
D: (Long pause, then insance laughter) O.K.
GH: How did you join up with them?
D: I answered an ad in The Rocket, that was the way things were done back then. You know, I really don't remember too much.
GH: Do you still play drums?
D: Oh yeah, I played in a band called Boomslang for eight years.
GH: Do you remember anything about being in The Fastbacks?
D: A bit.
GH: Well, what do you remember?
D: (Pause) Do you want to know the truth or what? I mean, I can't tell you everything.
GH: (Getting scared) Um, I'm not sure what you are getting at.
D: Well, what am I supposed to say?
GH: Well, what do you remember?
D: Let's see... what do I remember?
GH: Did you have fun?
D: Oh yeah, I had fun, we toured around a bit, played in Canada a lot. We opened for The Ramones once, that was great. This was back in '83-'84. What can I say? Eventually I just sort of lost interest.
GH: (In a reassuring tone) That's O.K.
D: What's the tone of this article, is it upbeat?
GH: Yeah, obviously I'm a huge fan, I mean I'm calling you ain't I?
D: Well, there's the story behind the story. It was a crazy time for me. There was this um, white powder around and a lot of Jack Daniel's (laughter).
GH: Sounds like your memory is starting to come back!
D: I've been sober for eight years, it's just that period... as you're talking about it, it's starting to come back. I remember that I didn't quit very gracefully. I don't know, the whole music business is an ugly trip. It's all about connecting with the right people.
GH: Or you can just do it for yourself. I don't think that the fact that major success has eluded The Fastbacks bothers them one bit.
D: Oh sure, "making it" can mean lots of things. To me, The Fastbacks have made it because they stuck it out, they believe in what they do and they keep putting material out. That's ultimately what it's all about.
