Interview by Mike LaVella from Gearhead #3

T: So you've been interviewing everybody that ever drummed for The Fastbacks?

GH: Yeah, even Tom Hendrickson who only did one show.
T: Sounds familiar!

GH: So you were only in for one show too, huh?
T: One show in Vancouver. I didn't really know them that well at the time. I moved here in '83 and started seeing them, they were the hot shit band at the time. Of course I had a really big crush on Kim.

GH: I'm finding out that a lot of people did. So according to Kurt, this gig that you played occurred between when Danny was in for the second time and when Richard was in for the second time.
T: That sounds about right, they asked me to come and practise and I said "great!" The clincher was, at one of the practices. Lulu invited me out to her Toyota where she had a 12 pack of beer waiting. I don't know why, but she always had a 12 pack in her car during that time, and we listened to the Dictators and The Shoes. We decided that there was chemisty right then and there.

GH: Wow, The Shoes, huh?
T: Yeah, and at that time they hadn't really made their big comeback yet! (Laughs).

GH: Yeah, that Shoes comeback, wow! That tour they did with Green Day boy, shit I'm sick of seeing The Shoes on MTV!
T: (Laughing) That's great!

GH: Yep, they would be the big comeback of '95, if not for the Urban Verbs and Yaughts reunions!
T: (Laughing hysterically) Stop it!

GH: So you ended up going out with Lulu eh?
T: Yeah, I had quite a crush on Lulu too.

GH: Kim and Lulu huh?
T: (Laughs) Why not? I never went out with Kim thought.

GH: So you were in the 'Fellas at the time that you played with The Fastbacks?
T: Oh yeah, I was but Kurt wasn't yet.

GH: Why didn't you stay in, because Richard came back?
T: No, it was just agreed upon that I was only in for one show.

GH: When was this?
T: 1985 I would say.

GH: This was before Nate came in and sort of solidified things for awhile.
T: Yeah, it was definitely during the "Stuvagroove" era. I think, and Kim will back me up on this, that it was the fastest Fastbacks show. I don't think that Kurt is sold on that, but Kim and I think it was.

GH: Why?
T: Probably because I was so nervous, it was a big teen show up in Vancouver.

GH: You couldn't have been anymore nervous than Tom Hendrickson!
T: I remember that show, me and Jim from the Fellows went to all their shows all the time. I'm still a huge fan but I'm somewhat of a hermit now.

GH: I heard that you wouldn't come out of your room for a gig once.
T: (Laughs) Which time?

GH: I'm hip, there's bad shit out there, rain... sun... people...
T: Especially people! I just draw and paint all the time, I don't like music anymore!
