Interview by Mike LaVella from Gearhead #3
GH: Let's see where you are on the Fastbacks drummers pie graph provided by Scott Lee, Superfan...
J: Is he pear shaped?
GH: No, why?
J: Have you heard that theory yet?
GH: No, do tell.
J: Kim's theory is that the biggest Fastbacks fans are middle-aged, pear shaped, balding men who come to their shows and need like all their records signed and, she's kinda right, at least in some cities.
GH: So you joined when?
J: '93 I think. I wasn't in too long, but I got to go on lots of tours with them. We went to the Midwest, did that whole tour with King Missile, plus the Japan trip.
GH: How did it come to pass that you joined in the first place?
J: Kurt knew me from the Dharma Bums, we had toured with the Young Fresh Fellows, so we were friends for a long time.
GH: But you always lived in Portland.
J: The way they put it to me was "we would rather play with a friend that we know that we can get along with than to have auditions," so I would just take the train up whenever we had engagements and I was more than excited to do it. But you know, I never felt like I was cutting the mustard with them.
GH: Why?
J: As a youth I never went through a play fast music punk phase, so I was always sort of intimidated playing with them beacuse you have to play really fast at times.
GH: That's funny, Dan Peters said the same thing.
J: That is funny, he's a really competent drummer. But you know, The Fastbacks are an institution. I kinda don't like messing with it, I feel like I'm cheating or something.
GH: You're being really hard on yourself.
J: Well, I mean I feel kinda guilty, like I'm the one that got to go to Japan - gimme a break!
