Our story, thus far... Damon Krukowski, Naomi Yang and Dean Wareham used to be in a band called Galaxie 500. Damon played drums, Naomi played bass and sang and Dean played guitar and sang. A lot of people enjoyed their music. They broke up in the Spring of 1991, and oddly enough a lot more people seem to like their music now that they're no longer together. Also in 1991, Damon and Naomi released their first EP by themselves, under the name Pierre Etoile (which means "Rock Star," for you franco-phobes). In 1992 they began recording under the name Damon & Naomi (seems fitting), and put out a record called More Sad Hits on Shimmy Disc (later re-issued by Sub Pop). Their second full-length, The Wondrous World of Damon & Naomi came out in 1995 on Sub Pop. Also during this time, Damon and Naomi started a publishing company called Exact Change, dedicated to reprints and translations of the classics of avant-garde literature, with a strong emphasis on works associated with Surrealism and other experimental art movements in the twentieth century. All are redesigned (by Naomi) and re-edited (by Damon). The Washington Post Book World called Exact Change, "One of the most ambitious small publishers to come on the scene in the last few years." In addition, Damon has managed to squeeze in time to act as Poetry Editor for Chicago's The Baffler magazine. |
